STEP 9   Inventory and Document Your Nutrients

Ensure that your nutrient management plan accounts for all the nutrients produced and used on your farm. If a significant amount of feed for the animals is purchased off the farm, it is likely that an adequate landbase is not available to handle all the manure (Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs 1997). Operations that do not have a sufficient land base for environmentally sustainable disposal should make arrangements to apply manure to neighboring lands. Arrangements should include signed agreements specifying the approximate manure resource to be spread on neighbouring lands. In some areas of the world with high densities of animal feeding operations, manure brokerage systems have been established to readily locate buyers for the manure resource. Other alternatives include:
